Student Data Collected:
ReplyDeleteExit cards:
I have only done exit cards for one class. Most of the students felt good about how class went and would like to do the lesson again.
Student Activity:
Students are more active during teacher lead activities. I suspected this to be the case. When I was tracking this I discovered that more students were engaged in two of my classes than the other one. My aerobics class and my personal fitness class had high participation most of the class period and even more during directed activities. My other class leisure and recreation had lower activity during teacher activities but more activity during individual activities.
Adults:
My mentor has observed that I seem to pay more attention to a certain group of individuals. This group is disruptive but there are other students are doing similar behavior that aren't as disruptive and I am tuning those folks out. I am learning to widen my scope and be more aware of my scope.
Directions:
Students are responding mostly positively to directions but not a promtly as I would like. If it is a direction that requires them to move more than they like I tend to get negative comments.
Me:
Compare Lessons:
I have been comparing my lessons. What I have realized is that I have been planning an extra 10. I have been spending more time in classroom management at the beginning of class and I am running out of time at the end.
Sleep:
The average amount of time I spend sleeping a night is about 6 hours. This is not enough sleep and it is affecting my concentration throughout the day.
Attitude Check:
Everyday I rate happiness on a scale of 1-10. I check this in the morning when I get to school and when I finish for the day. On average I rate an 8 in the morning and 6 at the end of the school day.
I observed that I have a sour attitude towards my class that has behavior problems. I dread going to that class and I suspect the students are aware that I am not fully enjoying myself.
Hey Cindy,
ReplyDeleteYou may want to post your reflections like this on the blog itself rather than as comments. It may make them easier to find.
I'm sorry to hear you find yourself with a "sour attitude." Do you think it's entirely because of the particular students in that class or have the issues with your mentor teachers influenced it as well?
How are you tracking the student activity during the various types of in-class activities? Are you writing them down as you go, reflecting after class, or what? Just curious about how you plan to consistently keep track of it while you're teaching. Record keeping, especially during class, is an area where I struggle, so any tips would be very helpful.
Any ideas on how you can get your students to quickly jump into an activity so you're not having to spend time managing them at the beginning of the period? Is this issue cropping up in all classes or just the one with the "behavior problems." I definitely understand dreading a difficult class every day. There are a couple of students in particular I could name that I don't look forward to dealing with on a daily basis.
